“Conversio” is a multi-element textual and visual narration based on the stories of migrant women. During her residency, artist’s worked with the migrant women of Birmingham all of different ages, ethnic backgrounds, languages, who for economic, health, family or other reasons they have left their home countries.

Results of this work will be presented at the exhibition at Centrala Gallery which will consist of video animations prepared by artist on the basis of the collected material, accompanied by a series of visual narrations created by project participants.

“Conversio” is a kind of documentation functioning between cultural barriers, language blockades and the limitations of the body. At the same time, the project aim’s to discuss the notion of femininity understood as a representation of culture. It is a multi-voiced dialogue with history which to the early 90s of the twentieth century has been examined mainly from the perspective of the universal West.

Malgorzata Dawidek is an internationally acclaimed Polish artist, based in London. The artist analyses issues of language awareness, borders and possibilities of language, as well as the human body perceived as a “reality text”. The artist makes use of various media in the creation of her works – textual objects and installations, painting, animation, written drawings and hypertexts in galleries and public spaces.

 

Exhibition opening: September 2, 2015 at 6.00 p.m. at the Centrala Gallery in Birmingham.

The exhibition will last until October 16, 2015.
