The book Poles in the UK: A Story of Friendship and Cooperation is the first to focus on the positive contribution that Polish people have made to the UK in war and peace time, over the last 1,000 years. It includes interviews with, and profiles of, over 50 Poles and those with Polish heritage.

Book sold out in print form

Written by Brin Best and Maria Helena Żukowska, the book was launched in August 2016 and received outstanding reviews and extensive media coverage in the UK and Poland, but has now sold out in print form.

The co-authors and the publisher (the charity The British Polonia Foundation) have decided to make the book available as a free PDF download to ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy it and read the important messages it contains about Polish-British cooperation.

Co-author Brin Best said: “We have been delighted by the success of Poles in the UK and the warm reception the book has received, both in the UK and in Poland. The publication of an e-Book version, which can be downloaded to PCs, laptops, tablets and even mobile phones, means that we can reach millions more readers, both in the UK and overseas.”

Speaking about the book last year Polish Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki said: “I wish to support the work of Brin Best and Maria Helena Żukowska, whose dedication and passion in building bridges between the Polish community in the UK and the broad British public is exceptional. What in my perspective makes this publication especially interesting for the British reader are the personal stories of Poles who settled in the UK, and show the richness and variety of ties between Poland and Britain.”

To document the social history of Poles in the UK

Brin is continuing his work to document the social history of Poles in the UK through a new series of interviews which are being published in the Tydzien Polski newspaper.

Building on the success of the book, Brin will also be visiting schools across the UK to talk to children and young people about the contribution of Polish people to Britain. Later this year the team behind the book will be launching a pack of teachers’ notes to help those in British schools teach about Poland, Polish people and Polish culture.
