Issued on 2 April 2015, the comic book presents the most important moments in the life of Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II. The project’s initiators hope that the publication will make the Japanese more familiar with St. John Paul II as a man committed to the struggle for freedom in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe in the late 1970s and 1980s.

As part of a newsletter of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tokyo published in Japanese, the comic by Rafał Gosieniecki also conveys a universal message of dignity and human rights. John Paul II has been declared the patron of the year 2015 by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.

“The Great Poles” is another comic book project of the Polish Embassy in Tokyo. It has previously released a series on legends and symbols surrounding Polish cities.
