The exchange program gives emerging choreographers opportunities to develop an artistic language through experiments in dance, intellectual dialogue, (self)reflection, experiencing new work and international dialogue with fellow artists, including artists from other disciplines. The program offers artists a unique study opportunity, not related to the production of a show, for participants to experience a new community, take artistic risks, redefine their own stance, discuss their own creative processes, and to find inspiration.

In Philadelphia, the Polish artists will participate in Hi Tea, an informal gathering with the extended local dance community at Dance/UP, when they will be able to test out new ideas with visiting artists and thinkers from across the city and around the world, browse the Resource Center (Lending Library and Video Resources), and make connections. Magdalena Ptasznik and Janusz Orlik will also take part in “Show and Tell,”during which visiting and local artists will give short presentations on their current work and process, with photos and video. Designed to instigate conversations on what motivates contemporary dance practice, this show and tell will kick off Dance/UP exchange by quickly orienting and introducing the visiting artists to the Philadelphia community, and form the basis for ongoing collaboration and exchange.

The residency week at Chez Bushwick in Brooklyn NY will expand upon the three weeks spent in residency in Philadelphia giving each choreographer time to work in the Chez Bushwick Studio in addition to taking and teaching class with the local dance community, sharing their projects and research with Chez Bushwick members and supporters, and accessing NYC resources to fuel new ideas and further cooperative projects.
