Jupiter is a socio-cultural quarterly, which focuses mainly on literature. It was first published on June 13th, 1999 as an initiative of Mrs. Jadwiga M. Hafner, its present Publisher and Editor in Chief.
The magazine is distributed mainly in Austria, but also to subscribers in various countries. It is arguably the most famous Polish magazine in the world. In Austria, Jupiter can be purchased at retail outlets of Polish press, Polish Cafes, and the libraries of PAN and the Polish Institute. The magazine’s website , created in 2005, has been visited by over 3,000,000 persons.
For 13 years the magazine has been organizing the Literary Contest of Marek Hłasko, which requires the participant to write a story on a contemporary subject. This event has received prose from over 20 countries around the world: from Australia, through the countries of the former Soviet Union, Europe, South Africa and the countries of South and North America – Canada, Bolivia, Argentina.
The magazine is subsidized by the Polish Community, the Senate and Wien Kultur.
