The change imposes the obligation to thoroughly check each person entering or exiting the Schengen zone. The amendment of the Schengen Border Code is the European Union’s reaction to continuing terrorist threat in Europe.
Up to now persons exercising the right to free movement, including Polish citizens, were subject to so called minimum border clearance. As of 7 April every person crossing an external border at any border crossing, whether at a land-, sea- or air-crossing, will undergo a detailed check.
Stricter rules will affect border control time and may extend the process.
The Polish Border Guard adjusted its procedures to new EU requirements and at the same time took measures to minimize the negative consequences of the introduced changes.
Depending on local needs and conditions and based on analysis of border traffic intensity and forecasts for a given day, Border Guard personnel will be assigned on a flexible basis. If required, additional checkpoints will be opened, even mobile ones in special cases.
The situation will be monitored on an ongoing basis and adequate steps will be taken to cope with bigger traffic and prevent excessive waiting times.
The Border Guard will spare no effort to make the control process as smooth as possible.
