It is hard to find in the western world an equivalent to Disco Polo. It is not just a genre of music, but a whole cultural phenomenon that could be situated somewhere at the crossroads of traditional folklore, an expression of the Slavic nature and staring at the American patterns. Maciej Bochniak attempts to capture this phenomenon in a broad context and aesthetic, both socially and politically. His film “Disco Polo”, which you will have the opportunity to see on November 19th at the Edinburgh Filmhouse during the Play Poland Film Festival, is a surreal comedy, whose creators – rather than evaluating – are trying to understand (with a kind of fascination) the atmosphere of Polish 90’s, when this kitschy genre captured the hearts and ears of the entire nation.
