Stargard Szczeciński is one of the oldest settlements in the West Pomerania. It’s beginnings date back to the turn of eighth and ninth centuries. Stargard has already been a member of the Hanseatic League at that time, which is reminded by many architectural monuments in the city, such as the Collegiate of the Blessed Virgin Mary built at the turn of thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It is currently an active member of the New Hanseatic League. Stargard is the third largest and one of the fastest growing cities economically in the West Pomeranian voivodeship. The city covers an area of 4.810 hectares and has about 70 thousand residents. It is located by the Ina River, 40 km from Szczecin, 180 km from Berlin and 120 km from the ferry terminal in Świnoujście. Stargard lies on the border of two large geographical regions, Szczecin Lowlands and Szczecin Lakelands, which has a large impact on the landscape diversity of its surroundings. The 15th meridian east runs through the Stargard Szczeciński, which is the main meridian of the Central European time zone.
Stargard is a city of high touristic and recreational value. It’s particularly interesting because of the highly ranked monuments that managed to be included in the European Route of Brick Gothic thanks to their beauty and value, combined with the environmental conditions. Surroundings of the city, the Lowlands of Pyrzyce and Stargard is rich in lakes, including the fifth-largest lake in Poland – Miedwie, situated 7 km from the city. The big Goleniowska Forest stretches 15 km west of Stargard Szczeciński, and the Ińsko Landscape Park, rich in forest and lakes, stretches 40 km on the east. Some of the famous Stargard people are: Bernard Pruski, a cyclist, a two-time Polish representative in the Peace Race, who was counted among the greatest and most distinguished athletes; Marek Jasiński, a composer and teacher; Przemysław Gintrowski, a bard, composer and musician and Ewa Kasprzyk, Polish stage, television and film actress.”
Stardgard is my city. I come back there willingly, and I hope that it will appear on the holiday hiking trail for many. I recommend ice cream in the Old Town, to visit the Museum, the lookout tower at the Cathedral and to take a walk in the beautiful parks. You may also go a few minutes down the bike path and relax by the beautiful Miedwie lake. WELCOME!
