Immigrants’ linguistic abilities have an important impact on their access to employment opportunities on foreign labour markets. According to the American Community Survey, over 220,000 Poles in the United States (either immigrants or those who report Polish ancestry) are classified by the U.S. Census Bureau as limited English proficient (LEP) individuals. About 40% of Polish immigrants speak English less than very well.

Polish immigration in Spain is a remarkable phenomenon. On the one hand, Polish people are one of the most integrated groups in Spain in terms of language, culture and profession, but on the other hand, they are very determined to cultivate their own tradition and culture.

Our parents want the best for us; I would not dare to question that. Often, they would decide to emigrate, unequivocally for our sake, knowing the difficulties awaiting them abroad such as learning a new language, finding a job within their field of expertise and of course integrating. However…
